Is My Screen Time a Problem?

Our devices are so important! They let us connect with people from around the world, create in varied mediums, and most importantly share moments with people we care about. But maybe it's worth thinking about the costs of our consumption. Is every moment on (TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, etc) worth it?

Calculate the Real Cost of Your Screen Time

This calculation assumes 8 hours of sleep per night.

Maybe its a Problem, But What Can I Do?

Start by identifying your reasons for wanting to reduce screen time. This could be to feel less lonely, sleep better, boost productivity, or simply be more present. Write down your goals.

Simple Steps to Reduce Screen Time:

Step 1: Make Screens Less Appealing & Gain Independence
  • Turn off unnecessary notifications to minimize distractions.
  • Switch your screen to grayscale.
  • Power off your phone during focus time
  • Declutter your home screen by removing unnecessary apps
  • Wear a watch to check time
  • Use a standalone alarm clock, not your phone
  • Always carry a book for idle moments
Step 2: Embrace Boredom & Choose Better Media

Understand that feeling bored can enhance mental well-being, sparking creativity and self-discipline. Allow yourself to experience and accept these moments without reaching for your phone.

  • If you're not convinced, opt for enriching media like podcasts, documentaries, or books that offer deeper engagement than social media.
Step 3: Develop Your Hobbies

You know all those things you say you want to do, but never seem to have time for? Less Screen Time = More Free time! Here spend time thinking of what hobbies you want to develop

  • Try a new sport, or revist an old one!
  • Spend time being creative – in whatever form (woodworking, painting, music, writing, etc)
  • Experiment in the kitchen, or treat yourself to your favorite restauraunt
  • Spend Time with Loved Ones: board games, movie nights, walks, and adventure!!

Recognize the challenge of changing your phone habits. Like any lifestyle change, it takes continuous effort. Remember, your time is valuable, and it's okay to guard it against endless scrolling.
